Above Ground Stations and How They Protect Your Facility from Termites
When you finally spot signs of a termite infestation in your facility, it’s easy to think the fastest fix is to spray them. But all that really does is take out the worker termites scouting for food. They’re easy to replace and only a small part of the growing threat underground.
Thankfully, there’s a smarter solution that uses those same workers to attack the queen and disrupt the colony. Curious how that works? Let’s talk about it in this article.
The Dangers of Termites in Manufacturing Facilities Go Deep
Before we get into the solutions, let’s review why termites are damaging to the manufacturing industry. One study reported that Malaysians spend over RM40 million a year on termite control, with industrial facilities accounting for 20% of that number.

These pests slowly eat away at your structure over time, hollowing out support beams, wall panels, and ceilings, and putting your workplace at risk. On top of that, infestations come with expensive repair costs. And in more serious cases, you might have to shut down parts of your operation just to carry out safety checks and fixes.
Because they’re small and quiet, termites are difficult to detect. Most facility managers only realise there’s a problem when their structural integrity is already compromised. Repairs and stress that could’ve been avoided if only proper protection had been in place.
What’s the Smartest Way to Protect Your Facility from Termites?
If you’re going to ask industry experts, the most recommended action is to start with pre-construction soil treatment. It’s one of the most effective long-term defences, and it protects your facility from the ground up for years.
Here’s how it works: during the early stages of construction, termiticide is applied beneath and around the building’s foundation. This forms a long-lasting barrier in the soil that blocks termites from ever reaching the structure. It’s an effective step that protects your investment right from day 1.
But what if your building is already up and running? You’ve still got solid options. That’s where post-construction termite treatments come in, like soil injection, In-Ground Stations (IGS), and Above-Ground Stations (AGS). We’ll talk more about the other post-con solutions, but to keep things simple, let’s focus on AGS and how they work.
What Is an Above-Ground Station (AGS)?

AGS, or Above-Ground Stations, are specialised termite control units designed to lure foraging termites and send the bait back to the colony. These units are discreetly placed along termite feeding lines or affected walls.
Each AGS contains an attractive bait that termites are drawn to, along with a slow-acting solution that disrupts their lifecycle. Here’s the clever part: after feeding, worker termites will carry the solution back to the colony and share it.
And because the solution won’t kill them right away, it has time to spread. Eventually, it reaches the queen, preventing her to shed, develop, and lay new and healthy generations of workers. This eventually leads to the collapse of the termite colony.
Both In-Ground and Above-Ground Stations work on the same principle. The only difference is location: one goes into the soil, the other goes on the walls or elevated areas.
How PestBusters Malaysia Handles Termite Baiting the Smart Way
Our team takes a precise and non-intrusive approach to termite control. We start with a detailed inspection using advanced tools to locate termite feeding lines..
We use the Moisture Encounter Plus (MEP) to pick up high moisture levels in walls and structures. Then, with the Electronic Stethoscope EM410, we listen for the subtle, low-frequency sounds termites make as they move and feed.
Once we confirm activity, we set up a baiting system made with the cellulose bait and the growth regulator. Worker termites bring the bait back to the nest, spreading it through the colony and eventually reaching the queen. Over time, the entire network collapses because the queen is unable to reproduce.
The system doesn’t require harsh chemicals, and it’s safe to use around sensitive work areas. It’s simple and effective, making it a reliable long-term solution for keeping termites out of your manufacturing facility.
How We Helped a Facility Cut Off Termite Infestation in 4 Months

In a recent project, a manufacturing facility was facing persistent termite activity along interior walls and ceiling panels. After confirming active trails during our inspection, we installed a network of Above-Ground Stations (AGS) directly on the affected areas.
The stations were placed near feeding sites to ensure maximum contact. Over the next four months, we carried out routine monitoring and rebaiting. With each visit, termite activity steadily declined as the bait was carried back and spread through the colony.
By the end of the fourth month, the colony had been fully neutralised, with no signs of live termites or new damage. The structure remained intact, and the operations continued without disruption.
